One Workbook Is All You Need

One of the simplest ways to keep homeschooling organised is also one of the oldest. At Britannia Classical Institute, we recommend that every pupil has a single workbook in which they complete all of their written work.

Rather than maintaining separate exercise books for every subject or managing folders full of loose worksheets, pupils keep their assignments, notes, rough working, copywork, narrations, and written exercises together in one place. This creates a straightforward record of their learning while greatly reducing the time spent organising materials.

A single workbook encourages pupils to develop good habits of order and responsibility. Each lesson is simply dated and titled, allowing work from different subjects to follow naturally throughout the day. Whether the lesson is mathematics, history, science, Latin, or grammar, everything is kept together in chronological order, creating a clear record of progress over the course of the year.

This approach is particularly helpful for families teaching several children. Instead of managing numerous exercise books, folders, and files for each subject, parents need only ensure that each child has their own workbook and writing materials. The result is a simpler, tidier, and more manageable learning environment.

The workbook is also a place for thinking. Pupils should feel free to use it for rough calculations, vocabulary lists, sketches, outlines, translations, and notes before producing more polished work where appropriate.
