Why We Use Public Domain Books
One of the distinctive features of Britannia Classical Institute is that our curriculum is built almost entirely upon public domain books. At first glance, this may seem unusual. In an age of glossy textbooks, subscription platforms, and constantly changing curricula, some may wonder why we choose books that were written a century or more ago.
The answer is simple: because they are among the finest educational books ever written.
We do not select books because they are old, nor do we reject books simply because they are new. Our concern is quality. Many of the great educational texts of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were written by experienced teachers for use in schools, refined through decades of classroom practice, and proven to educate generations of pupils successfully. They were designed not merely to prepare children for examinations but to cultivate knowledge, understanding, good judgement, and intellectual discipline.
